The Influence of Social Media on Trending Cosmetic Procedures in Tampa, Florida

With cosmetic trends constantly circulating on social media like “Kendall Jenner Breast Augmentation" and “Zac Efron Facelift,” beauty trends fade as quickly as they begin. However, one trend that has continued to grow over the past year is one most wouldn’t expect: honesty. More people are openly sharing what cosmetic surgeries and procedures they've had, as seen with Kylie Jenner revealing her implant size and plastic surgeon.

Cosmetic procedures continue to boom in Tampa, Florida, and the city has become a hub for exceptional plastic surgery. As a female board-certified plastic surgeon, I think it's important to discuss the procedures that have become increasingly popular because of social media.

GLP-1 makeover:

Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and other GLP-1 medications have taken over Tampa, leading to major weight loss for many patients. While shedding pounds is the desired goal, some patients don’t realize the dramatic effect weight loss can have on the body. Sagging skin in the abdomen, arms, legs, and breasts, along with volume loss in the labia, breasts, or face, are all side effects of taking GLP-1 medications.

Social media has coined the terms “Ozempic face” or “Ozempic butt” because of these changes. A GLP-1 makeover addresses these concerns, and patients request a combination of procedures. Surgeries that reshape and redefine the body are known as body contouring procedures and usually include a combination of liposuction and skin removal or tightening. Facelift, fat transfer to the face, breast lift, breast augmentation, arm lift, thigh lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction are common procedures requested by GLP-1 patients.

At Temmen Plastic Surgery, we require patients to stop any GLP-1 medications four weeks prior to surgery. This helps ensure patient safety and allows patients to maintain a stable weight before undergoing surgery.

Mommy Makeover:

Mommy makeovers have taken Tampa by storm, giving moms confidence in their new skin. It can be disheartening when a woman experiences the miracle of becoming a mother but no longer recognizes her body. When social media constantly showcases models and influencers who appear to immediately “bounce back,” the transition can feel especially difficult.

A mommy makeover combines multiple body contouring procedures, typically including liposuction, a tummy tuck, and a breast procedure. This may include a breast augmentation, lift, reduction, fat transfer, or implant removal. The goal is to contour the body and restore some of the pre-pregnancy features by removing unwanted sagging, excess fat, and loose skin that often remain after pregnancy. These procedures are transformative not only physically but emotionally for many women, making this one of my favorite surgeries to perform.

Labiaplasty:

Labiaplasty has grown exponentially in popularity in Tampa as more women discover this life-changing surgery. The desire for a "designer" or "Barbie" vagina has become more common online, leading more women to share their experiences with labiaplasty.

While the stigma persists that labiaplasty is simply a "vanity procedure" and purely cosmetic, proper education continues to reduce that misconception. Labiaplasty addresses excess tissue of the labia minora, labia majora, or clitoral hood. Women choose labiaplasty for many reasons, including discomfort in tight leggings or pants, feeling self-conscious in a bathing suit, pain while exercising or running, discomfort during sex, or feeling self-conscious during intimacy.

I have performed over a thousand labiaplasties, and the results remain the same: women are astonished they didn't do it sooner and grateful to finally live without discomfort.

Liposuction with Fat Transfer:

Liposuction with fat transfer is a versatile procedure that creates natural curves, addresses stubborn fat, and ages beautifully with the body. The desirable “flat stomach”, “hourglass shape”, and “full breasts and butt” that are seen on social media can be achieved through this procedure.

Patients request liposuction from various areas of the body such as the abdomen, back, legs, chest, and arms. This fat is then transferred to another area of the body where more fullness is desired. For many of my patients this means transferring to the breasts, buttocks, hips, or face. Patients love the beautiful curves and elegant, feminine shape this surgery creates. Many patients choose liposuction with fat transfer because they can address two concerns at once: removing unwanted fat while restoring volume where it's needed.

The procedure has only continued to grow in popularity as social media trends emphasize natural-looking curves. As a plastic surgeon, this is one of my favorite combinations to perform because patients love their results.

Mini Breast Augmentation:

Breast augmentation continues to be one of the most popular surgical procedures in Tampa, but over the last year, patients have increasingly requested smaller implant sizes. The “ballerina breast augmentation” or “Pilates breast augmentation” is a trend that comes from social media and the rise of the “quiet luxury” aesthetic. This aesthetic applies not only to fashion but to cosmetic procedures as well!

Women desire fuller breasts but recently shy away from larger cup sizes. Women are seeking out ultra-natural enhancements, often increasing their breast size by only one or two cups with implants ranging from 150cc to 300cc. Smaller implants fit the active lifestyle many of our patients lead, allowing them to workout comfortably.

“Skinny” Brazilian Butt Lift:

Brazilian butt lift, or BBL, has been a controversial procedure since its introduction and is often regarded as a surgery only done in Miami. However, with both state and federal regulations enforcing strict safety precautions, BBL can be performed very safely.

Literature published several years ago described BBL as the most dangerous plastic surgery, claiming that 1 in 3,000 patients died from the procedure. It was later discovered that the study contained skewed data, and BBL is considered safe when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon using proper safety protocols.

The “skinny” or “mini” BBL is a less dramatic enhancement than standard BBL, as less fat is transferred to the hips, flanks, and butt. This procedure has exploded on social media and in Tampa, with many public figures undergoing this procedure. The results of skinny BBL can look like a patient simply gained a little weight or started training extra hard at the gym!

My philosophy as a Tampa plastic surgeon is simple. I want to restore balance, confidence, and proportion in a natural way, not change who you are. Every decision I make is guided first and foremost by safety, anatomy, and long-term results- not by what's trending. While social media has a significant influence on plastic surgery in Tampa, I will always recommend what will age as gracefully as my patients.
